Introduction of Surah Rehman

Surah Rahman
Name & Meaning Of Surah Rehman

This surah is named Al-Rehman after the word with which it starts. It is also related to its subject matter, ‘‘Attributes of Allah’’ and his countless blessings from the start of Surah to the end. The meaning of Ar-Rehman is ‘‘The Most Beneficent’’.

While Surah Al-Qamar describes in graphic detail Allah’s wrath, Surah Rehman provides us with comprehensive information about His bounties and rewards. This is a clear continuation of Surah Ar-Qamar’s final ayah.

The title “Arūs al-Qur’ān” (عَروسُ القُرآن) has been applied to Surah Rehman, signifying the Quran’s bride. This surah’s name was chosen because it discusses many of paradise’s benefits, particularly the houris and the lovely, modest, and obedient celestial women who are referenced in multiple verses.

Details of Surah Rehman
Period of Revelation

It is doubtful whether it’s ‘Makki’’ surah or ‘‘Madni. According to most authentic scholars, e.g., Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas, Ikrimah, and Qatadah, it is a Madni surah, but according to some other traditions, it is Makki due to its strong resemblance to other Makki surahs.

Theme and subject matter:

This is the only surah of the Quran that directly addresses both human beings and jinn (the other creation of Allah, which has freedom of will and action). In this Surah both men and jinn are instructed to acknowledge the magnificence of Allah’s might, His innumerable benefits, their own powerlessness, and their responsibility before Him.

They are informed of the wonderful outcomes of His obedience as well as the terrible repercussions of disobeying Him. This surah describes the main goal of human beings.

  • 1-4 Allah Taala taught the Quran to human beings and taught them how to communicate their emotions and ideas.
  • 5-16 Allah Ta’ala is the creator of all the universe.
  • 17-25 Allah Ta’ala controlled all the oceans and all the things in them.
  • 26-30 Allah Ta’ala is ever alive; otherwise, all are temporary.
  • 31-40 Allah Ta’ala will surely judge both human beings and jinn.
  • 41-45 Allah Ta’ala will assign the evil to hellfire.
  • 46-78 The rewards of Jannah were explained.

For better understanding, I have divided Surah into four sections.

First Section of the Surat Rehman:

If we check the tafseer of the 1st ruku, we’ll see that Allah Taala showed the balance and harmony of the world. He described the rewards and gifts in the form of Jannah and the terrible scenes of Hell. Those who obey the golden rules described by Allah will go to Jannah, and those who are disbelievers will go to Jahanam.

Second Section of Surat Rehman:

In this section, Allah Ta’ala beautifully explains his rewards: that he has created fruits, crops, vegetables, and the four seasons. This is his glory: to alternate the seasons and allow the fruits and vegetables to ripen.

Third Section of Surat Rehman:

In this part, Allah Ta’ala showed the scenes of Judgement Day so that everybody would see his charge sheet. Those who receive it in the right hand will go to Jannah, and those who receive it in the left hand will go to Jahanam.

Fourth Section of Surat Rehman:

In this final part, Allah Ta’ala explained the main purpose of human beings, which is the worship of Allah. We should consider this world temporary and prepare ourselves for that permanent world.

Structure:

The most remarkable structural feature of Ar-Rehman is refrain. ‘‘Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?’’ (فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ). It appears 31 times in the 78 verses.

Importance of Surah Rehman:

Because of its poetic grace, the surah has been known as “the beauty of the Quran.” ‘‘Everything has an embellishment, and the embellishment of the Quran is Surah Ar-Rehman’’ (Baihaqi)

Connection between Surah Ar-Rehman and other Surahs in the Quran:

In Inner Dimensions from the Order of the Surahs in the Qur’an, Imam al-Suyuti writes:
Allah Taala said at the end of Al-Qamar

بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّ
‘‘Even better, the hour is when they are supposed to arrive, and it will be the most terrible and disastrous hour.’’(Al-Qamar 54:46)
Then He spoke about the status of the God-fearing people in the gardens and rivers and the state of the criminals in Saqar (another term for Hell). In this surah, he provides a thorough explanation of each issue from the abstract verse in the chronological sequence in which it appeared.

He begins by expressing the hour’s harshness and making reference to its terrible essence. Then he goes on to speak of the people of Paradise and the Fire.

يُعْرَفُ ٱلْمُجْرِمُونَ بِسِيمَـٰهُمْ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِٱلنَّوَٰصِى وَٱلْأَقْدَامِ
‘‘The wicked will be identified by their appearance, and their feet and forelocks will seize them.’’ (Ar-Rehman 55:41)
He did not utilise ‘the disbelievers’ or a close term because of this surah’s link to His words in the previous one:

 إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ
‘‘Indeed, the criminals’’ (Al-Qamar 54:41)
Then Allah explains Jannah and its people.

وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِۦ جَنَّتَانِ
‘‘And there will be two gardens for everyone who is awestruck by standing before their Lord.’’

The core of fearing God is this: fearing the station of the Lord. In order to maintain consistency between the language used in the reference and the explanation, he also avoided using phrases like “Those who believe and are obedient will have” or similar statements.
It should be clear from that that the entire surah explains the conclusion of the surah that came before it. And all glory and inspiration for what He has brought to our understanding belong to Allah.

So, we should read this surah on a daily basis, read its translations, and act upon all matters narrated by Allah Ta’ala. One should have no doubts regarding Allah’s kindness after reading this surah and be grateful for His readiness to accept our repentance and take us to the highest tiers of paradise.
